Engineering Management

The Master of Engineering in Engineering Management is a professional practice-orientated graduate program offered through UNL’s College of Engineering.

The 36 credit hour master degree combines advanced engineering and business management. Core courses are delivered online by faculty from the Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering. Additional courses are provided online by the College of Business Administration’s MBA program.

Who should consider this degree?

The graduate degree is designed for individuals who have at least one degree in engineering, or significant engineering practice and a degree in a related field. The non-thesis Master of Engineering is geared toward the working professional. It’s ideal for:

UC Irvine Graduates Transfer Credits

You're on your way to earning a Master of Engineering in Engineering Management at UNL.

Graduates from UC Irvine Extension's certificate programs in Communications Systems Engineering, Embedded Systems Engineering, or Medical Product Development are eligible to transfer credits to UNL's engineering management program. Students must meet the admission requirements for UNL's Master of Engineering program.

UCI and UNL's partnership allows your graduate level course credits to transfer and fulfill either requirements or electives. Transfer credits for 15 or 16 quarter credits are equivalent to 10 or 10.7 semester credit hours, respectively.

Tuition rates are effective as of 7/1/09 and are subject to change in July of each year.

Program of Study

The degree program requires a total of 36 semester credits consisting of 18 credits in Industrial and Management Systems Engineering (IMSE) and 9 credits in Management or Business Administration. The remaining 9 credits may be taken from engineering, management or business. All courses are 3 semester credit hours and are set up in accelerated 10-week sessions.

All courses for the master’s degree may be completed entirely online. The program combines an engineering and business curriculum into one degree, preparing graduates for management-level positions.

  • Designed for working professionals, the MEng degree is centered on relevant topics and allows students to combine classroom experiences with workplace challenges.
  • Prepare for career advancement by studying topics including organizational structure and development, statistics, risk, process and economic analyses, project management, evaluation procedures, business theories and practice.

This non-thesis, professional practice master’s program requires 36 credit hours:

  • 18 credits in Industrial and Management Systems Engineering (IMSE)
  • 9 credits in Management or Business Administration
  • Remaining 9 credits may be taken from engineering, management or business

  • Engineering Economy II (Decision and Risk Analysis ) (IMSE 806)
  • Engineering Management II (IMSE 905)
  • Three hours from other IE courses in Systems Modeling and Analysis section or Statistical Analysis section
  • Six additional IMSE hours from IE courses

High speed Internet connection is required. Check the Graduate Distance Catalog to learn the specific requirements for your program.

Some distance courses have supplemental materials on videos or CDs and others may require phone conferencing. You will interact with the professor and other students through e-mail, phone conferencing, and Blackboard.

Blackboard™ Requirements and Browser Configurations:
To effectively use Blackboard the Javascript and cookies on your computer must be enabled. Some content for features may require additional software. Pop-up blockers should be disabled for Blackboard (My.UNL). The browsers below are officially supported.

  • Safari: 2.0 or higher

Older versions of the above or alternative browsers (such as Mozilla and Opera) may be compatible, but some features might not be available. To download the latest browsers, click the “help” button in Blackboard (My.UNL) and access the Downloads area.

Operating Systems:
Microsoft® Windows® 2000 and up, or Mac OS X, 10.2 and up are strongly recommended. Older operating systems (Microsoft® Windows® 98SE/ME, MacOS 8/9) or alternative platforms (Linux) are compatible, but may not have full functionality. Blackboard (My.UNL) is not currently compatible with handheld devices or Web-enabled phones.

Note: Using Blackboard with AOL:
While you can use AOL as your service provider, you cannot use the AOL Web browser to access Blackboard (My.UNL). If you try to use the AOL browser, you will find that it will automatically log you out every few minutes and you will experience problems with some of Blackboard’s services including assessments (tests and quizzes).

If you are an AOL user, once you’ve connected to the Internet, use a different Web browser to access the Internet.

 

Admission Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution (engineering or math-based recommended, but not required)
  • Calculus – at least one academic year
  • Statistics or calculus-based probability course
  • Engineering economy course
  • At least one engineering science course such as statistics, thermodynamics, or electrical circuits
  • Two years work experience

Application Deadline

Rolling admissions. Applications are reviewed upon receipt of materials.


Review Process

  1. Graduate Studies performs a preliminary review after receiving your online application, $45 application fee and transcripts. Your file is then forwarded to the Department Graduate Committee for review.
  2. Department Graduate Committee conducts a departmental review only after all materials are received. The Department Graduate Committee notifies Graduate Studies of their admission recommendation.
  3. Graduate Studies conducts a final review. If you are admitted, Graduate Studies will notify you by e-mail and mail.
