The master's degree in Family and Consumer Sciences Education is designed for individuals who have a bachelor’s degree in family and consumer sciences or a related area, and are seeking initial teacher certification or licensure in family and consumer sciences education.
There is a nationwide shortage of family and consumer sciences teachers, especially in rural areas.
The 38-41 credit hour program provides the pedagogy requirements for a family and consumer sciences teaching certificate in Nebraska and most states. Teacher certification requirements vary by state. The first step toward certification is to contact the family and consumer sciences teacher training institution in the state where you want to teach. Alternatively, you may choose to develop and conduct youth programming in an informal educational setting.

Method of Delivery
Courses are taught online using a course management system (Blackboard) accessed through your web browser. Some courses have supplemental materials on videos or CDs, and others may require phone conferencing.
Interaction between students and faculty is via e-mail, phone conferencing and the Internet classroom. Students interact with faculty and share the experiences of fellow students from across the country and internationally.(All GP-IDEA courses have the same tuition rate for Resident and Non-Resident students.)
Great Plains IDEA Program
This program is part of the Great Plains Interactive Distance Education Alliance (Great Plains IDEA), a consortium of eleven universities offering fully online graduate programs.
Each university brings a unique strength to the multi-institution academic programs.
You apply, and are admitted at one university; enroll in all your courses at that university; and, graduate or receive a certificate from that university. However, your online courses are taught by the best faculty in the discipline from several universities.

The master’s degree program requires between 38 – 41 credit hours to be completed from the following course offerings:

CYAF 818 History and Philosophy of FACS & Career and Technical Education
SPED 801B Exceptional Learners
TEAC 861 Multicultural Education
CYAF 855 Adolescent Learning and Development
CYAF 825 Literacy in the Content Area
CYAF 850 Teaching with Technology
CYAF 804A FACS Methods I (taken concurrently with a practicum)
CYAF 804B FACS Methods II (taken concurrently with a practicum)
CYAF 897E Practicum (two from 1 – 3 credits each)
CYAF 813 Student Teaching (10 weeks minimum)
CYAF 898 Research Project/Action Research
Courses are offered over a three-year period, with the participating institutions sharing the teaching responsibilities for each course. The actual course titles may vary from institution to institution. The degree awarding institution is responsible for placement of students for practicum and internship experiences. Note: Using Blackboard with AOL: While you can use AOL as your service provider, you cannot use the AOL Web browser to access Blackboard (My.UNL).
